Emphatic win for juniors

The hosts recorded their fifth successive win in the series and team manager Peter Crenan was delighted with his Jersey team’s showing, as they dropped just two-and-a-half points out of the 17 available.Jersey’s team went into the event in fine form, as six of their nine players had broken their handicaps the previous weekend while playing in the Silver Man Trophy, and they did not disappoint.’It was an excellent win.

Everyone played their part to the full,’ said Crenan.’We had nine single-figure handicappers in the team and although we lose four next year we should be equally as strong as we currently have two seven and two eight handicappers ready to come in.’Guernsey were horrified to hear that – they choose their side and they’ve only got two others currently playing golf that don’t get in the team.’We are strong because of the system we have in place and Jersey is so much better off in the way of facilities.’The match started off slowly for us and halfway through the foursomes I’d have settled for 2-2 as we were down in two matches, level in another while one-down in the other.’But the lads turned it round to win the section 4-0.

They then followed that up winning the afternoon fourballs by winning three matches and drawing the other.’Jack Waters and Mark Tostevin were an awesome pairing in both sections, they romped to a 6 and 5 win in the foursomes while they were three-under-par gross through nine holes before winning 5 and 4.’The singles also went Jersey way, the lost just two of the seven matches to seal a 14-and-a-half point win against two-and-a-half.The shot of the weekend was by Adam Jones, son of former professional footballer Chris, at the 18th hole in the final match before a gallery of around 60.One-up Jones played his second shot out off a bunker and with his opponent on the green in two Jones had to get down in two to have any chance of sharing the hole and he did so superbly by hitting a third shot of around 60 feet to within a few feet of the pin to eventually share the hole and win against Sean Mills.
