Jail sentences could halve

Home Affairs have included these as some of the options available as they work to compile a criminal justice policy for the Island.During consultation, a number of suggestions have been made to solve La Moye’s overcrowding problem and the historical role of the Centenier in the Magistrate’s Court has been safeguarded.Last year the Rutherford Review of Criminal Justice Policy in Jersey called for Centeniers to be removed from the courts and for a public prosecution service to be established.

But these have been rejected by the executive placed in charge of drawing up the new system.The executive have taken up all nine of the other recommendations put forward in October’s Rutherford Review, but due to States funding constraints and the views of the Attorney General regarding the matter, they have decided to retain the court system in its current state.
