Clipper kept in harbour by hurricane

The eight yachts in the round-the-world adventure were due to set sail for Jersey yesterday, but they remain in New York pending a weather improvement. The cause is Hurricane Fabian, which is currently 200 miles north-east of Barbuda but is moving towards the east coast of America.

The storm is increasing in speed and is expected to arrive off the coast of Nova Scotia at the end of this week. The boats remain at the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in Manhattan.

It is hoped that the last leg of the 11-month race will get under way on Friday or Saturday, but this is obviously dependent on the activities of Fabian.

The delay will affect the fleet’s time of arrival in St Helier, and the organisers of the stopover in Jersey are watching events closely.
