Mystery visitors granted asylum

An African frog and a praying mantis are being cared for by shelter vet Tiffany Blackett until appropriate homes can be found for them. The frog, which has yet to be identified, literally hopped out of a suitcase yesterday when a woman was unpacking having returned to Jersey from a holiday in Zambia.

The creature made its long journey to Jersey in the folds of a gift-wrapped present – highlighting the oft repeated warning to air travellers about carrying packages given to them by others. The woman immediately called the shelter who caught the amphibian for her.

It is now waiting identification by Jersey Zoo staff so it can be fed the correct diet.States vet Mike Nicholls said it was not illegal to bring the frog in and as long as a proper home could be found for it the creature could live out its days in Jersey.

The mantis was taken to the shelter by a householder after flying through an open window.
