Wheway Wildcats II 26, AIB Shamrocks 6: The Wildcats’ victory was not down to another of their own impressive displays, rather to the unfortunate and unusually erratic performance by the Shamrocks’ pitcher.Batting second, Wildcats II took a slender 4-1 advantage at the end of the first innings and everything looked set for a nail-biting finale to the Division I title race.However the second innings proved disastrous for Shamrocks’ pitcher Paul Wilkinson.
Usually very consistent, he struggled to find his usual line and length and as a result ‘walked’ one Wildcats’ batter after another, and by the end of the second innings the Wildcats led 24-2.Shamrocks rallied towards the end of the innings but their opponents, with a couple of gears in hand, coasted to victory.
Wildcats’ success this season has been due to their teamwork and resolve.
As worthy winners of the Division I championship, they complete a unique treble, having already won the indoor title and the knock out trophy.
They now prepare for the CI Club Championship against Specsavers Rookies, Guernsey’s Division I winners, which takes place on 13 September, when they will be looking for that fourth trophy to cap an incredible season.Wheways Wildcats I 24, Mourant’s Devil’s Advocates 13: In their last outdoor game of the 2003 season the Devils produced some good quality softball although it took them until the third innings to score.Back after injury Simon Barrett scored home runs in the third and fifth innings with Gareth Essex-Cater following suit further on in the fifth.Barrett also played a reliable game at short stop, orchestrating an important double play.In the outfield Christine Reilly took an amazing catch during the sixth innings which she winged in to Barrett, covering second, to make the Devils’ second double play of the match, but their good tactical play was not enough to outshine the experience of the Division I team.Storm 31, Falcons 4: Storm got off to a good sharp start with ten runs in their first innings.
Falcons hit back, scoring four in reply, but they were unable to add to this score during the remainder of the game while Storm gradually increased their lead.Matt Browning and John Pendergast batted well for Storm, getting on base each time they batted and Roslyn Buttle also had an excellent game with the bat.
For Falcons, Neath Lamb had an excellent all-round game.Ansbacher Flyers 23, CPA 16: Ansbacher Flyers were out to enjoy their last league game of the season, and with a much-improved squad benefitting from four Island team players and relative newcomers Kerry-Ann Laffoley and Robin Van Tonder, they won it too.
CPA’s pitcher had a bad start but improved as the game went on.
Flyers’ batters benefitted from walks to second base and, with runners in scoring positions, the big hitters brought home the bacon.
Van Tonder took the last catch of the season and Christine Bouchard played her first game after a four year break from the sport.Cubs scratched to Eagles.
