To catch a thief – high technology takes over from the identity parade

The system, which is already in use by forces across the UK, saves the police from having to find lookalikes for a conventional identity parade.Instead, a brief description of the suspect, including details such as hair colour and ethnicity, are fed into a computer database containing 9,000 people which selects about 150 matches. An officer than selects the best 15 and presents these to the suspect, who chooses eight to be put before the witness.A 15-second video clip made of the suspect is then placed among similar clips of the eight volunteers chosen.

The accused man or woman can choose which order the clips are played in.
