Miroslaw Giza (29), of Rue des Prés, was bound over for one year after he admitted causing the birds unnecessary suffering and unreasonably neglecting them on 3 July at the Happy Hens Chicken Farm, Grouville. But through an interpreter in court, Giza, a Polish national, blamed a breakdown in communications between his manager, Robert Milner, and himself.Grouville Centenier Duncan Page said that at around midnight on 3 July, honorary officers led States police to the trailer, which had been left in a field. When they opened the trailer the police found over 230 chickens, stacked four high, dying in the humid conditions.

Officers removed all of the birds and found approximately 100 dead, the Centenier said. When Giza was interviewed he told police that he was following instructions and thought there was enough room in the trailer for all the chickens.
