Don’t let emotions rule’ in minimum wage issue

The Chamber’s president, Bob Hassell , says it is important that the minimum is set at a realistic level which will ensure a supply of lower-level jobs in sectors that can afford to pay high wages.’This is not a case of profiteering by employers.

The real issue is breaking the back of a business through enforced additional costs that cannot be offset by passing them on to the clients,’ Mr Hassell said.

‘We shall be lobbying for a fair rate and will resist calls for for emotional and inflationary claims from those who seek them.’Mr Hassell made the remarks to more than 200 members of the business community at a Jersey Chamber of Commerce lunch at the Pomme d’Or Hotel.
