ON the eve of the States debate on the proposed Les Pas deal, JEP readers have voted against the deal by a ratio of seven to one in a tephone poll.A total of 881 callers voted against the proposed deal to give Les Pas Holdings a £10m prime waterfront site in return for dropping its legal claim to the St Helier foreshore, with 134 in favour. In an embarrassing mix-up by Jersey Telecom, the figures initially announced – and featured in a JEP report which prompted anti-deal politicians to start a move for a reference back – ran into thousands. The proportion of 7-1 was unchanged by the retraction, however.

Jersey Telecom apologised to the JEP for the mistake, which arose from the number of call seonds, rather than the number of callers, being reported. After the poll, Senator Ted Vibert said that he would propose the deal be referred back to the Policy and Resources Committee. He said this was so they could ‘consider the implications of such an overwhelming defeat for their deal’.

The question people were asked to vote on was: ‘Do you believe the States should vote for or against accepting the Les Pas deal proposal?’
