Asbestos fear closes garage workshop

Employees arrived at Freelance Toyota yesterday morning to find the affected areas covered in dust.

Builders had been in over the weekend to cut holes in the roof ready for the installation of a number of skylights.A private company was called in yesterday to take samples of the air in the workshop, but the results of those tests were not available this morning.Officers from Health and Safety were due to visit the premises at lunchtime today to assess how the matter should be dealt with.Managing director of Freelance Tim Smyth said that around 20 of his staff had been evacuated from the workshop and parts area.’We will not open the areas until we have got the all- clear,’ he said.

‘It is just very dusty at the moment and the relevant parts of the building have been closed off.

We just want to be sure, we don’t want anyone working in there if there is any risk.’Mr Smyth said that no areas used by the public were affected.
