States tenants to learn 2004 rents in Christmas mail

Housing Committee president Deputy Terry Le Main said in the States yesterday that tenants would receive a letter on 5 December, showing them the rent they would be eligible to pay from January.

And in April next year, all 5,000 States tenants will face a further increase. The increase in rents follow the decision of the States to cut back on the rent abatement system earlier this year.

But Deputy Le Main insisted that those in genuine hardship cases would be dealt with sympathetically by the committee.Rents for those with savings could double, and rents for those in receipt of disability allowances could go up by between 30 and 40 per cent, said Deputy Geoff Southern, who also pointed out that tenants would only find out what their new rent was a month before it came into effect, and during the Christmas period.Deputy Le Main was responding to questions from Deputy Southern about first-time buyer units at the Waterfront and the impact of the cutting back on rent abatements agreed by the States earlier this year.
