Imported semen ‘no threat’ to unique herd

He was speaking at the extraordinary general meeting held last night at the society’s Trinity headquarters, attended by around 40 members, which had been called to discuss further the report submitted by geneticist Dr Maurice Bichard on the future sustainability of the Island herd.As reported previously, Dr Bichard had been commissioned by the society to study the sustainable development of the Island herd, and his report was presented to members at a meeting held in August.

This second meeting was called to give an opportunity for members to question Dr Bichard on his findings and to express their own considered opinions on his report.Mr Le Feuvre said: ‘There is a need to retain the unique status of the Island herd, but the perception of this is being met in the wrong way by insisting that the import of semen be blocked.

We can still have a unique situation in the Island, as 90 per cent of the bulls used would have an ancestry completely traceable back to the Island.’
