Roy Spencer (46) and Terry Rennell (55) died on 27 July when their boat sank off White Rock near Rozel.

The inquest into their deaths closed yesterday after hearing that their boat was overloaded, that they were inexperienced sailors and that Mr Rennell could not swim. But exactly what caused the 15-ft boat to sink could remain a mystery because no one saw it go down and neither Mr Spencer nor Mr Rennell managed to make a radio distress call.

Both men were pulled out of the water by lifeboat crew, but only one of them was wearing a lifejacket.Giving his verdict, Deputy Viscount Peter de Gruchy said the pair accidentally drowned when the small motor boat sank in circumstances which ‘have not yet been definitively ascertained’.
