Parking charges for motorcyclists in town?

The idea to charge riders for parking has been put forward in response to the growing demand for motorbike spaces in the town centre.’At the moment we are undertaking a full parking review,’ said Fay Calvert, manager of parking control, ‘and the possibility of charging motorcycle users is definitely one thing under consideration.’However the plan has come under widespread attack from local motorcyclists and Constable of St Helier Simon Crowcroft.’I would be very concerned if charging were to be introduced,’ said the Constable.

‘Not only would there be all kinds of practical problems, but the amount of savings that can be made to the taxpayer by people using two-wheeled transport is not to be underestimated.’The parish is currently trying to encourage the use of motorbikes and cycles, which reduce traffic and parking congestion and the Constable is concerned that parking charges and a lack of adequate spaces may cause people to return to their cars.
