Retrial for man convicted of heroin smuggling

George Barr (25) had his conviction for importing almost £220,000 worth of heroin on 29 March overturned in the Court of Appeal earlier this month.

He appealed on the grounds that new evidence – a note from his co-accused who admitted setting him up – would show he was unaware that he had imported the drugs.Barr was arrested on 29 March after packages containing 488g of heroin were found inside Kinder eggs in a ceramic oven he had brought to the Island from Scotland.

He pleaded guilty to the charge and was sentenced to nine years in prison. But the Court of Appeal found that he had been given ‘wholly inadequate legal advice’ by legal firm Mourant.
