States start debate on migration policy

The Policy and Resources Committee have gone to the States asking for their consent to draw up a policy that would regulate and monitor – probably through smartcards – people coming into the Island.

Although the policy has not yet been written, P&R want broad agreement to the principles of the policy before they start work on the details. If successful, P&R say they will bring a formal and detailed proposition to the States around the end of the year.

But they also say that the question of an upper limit on the number of people allowed to live in the Island should be left over for now.Comments supporting the moves proposed by the P&R Committee have been lodged by several committees, including Employment and Social Security and Housing.Although the States made slow work of question time this morning, the migration policy debate began and was expected to continue well into the afternoon.
