Centenier to the rescue in town kicking attack on twins

Centenier Christopher Gray, who was working his usual shift as a taxi driver, told the court that he was driving along the Esplanade at about 3 am on 29 March when he saw the fight near the works hoardings before Babylon.Billy Steel (18) and Ryan Powell (20) deny committing a grave and criminal assault on twins Tobias and Christian Freudenburg (25).Centenier Gray said he saw the fight and immediately called for police assistance.

‘I got out of the car and saw the two men lying on the floor and noticed the other three were walking away towards the Weighbridge,’ he said.’I asked a colleague, who had arrived in another taxi, to attend the injured men while I got back in my car and went after the others.’One ran away and he and another driver managed to restrain Steel and Powell until the States police arrived and arrested the pair.During Steel’s interview with the police he repeatedly said he could not remember the incident because he had been drinking so much.

Powell told officers that he did punch someone, but only after he saw that person attacking Steel.
