Constable: ‘Fear halted new racism forum plans’

Earlier this week P & R Committee president Senator Frank Walker withdrew a proposition from the States agenda for the establishment of the Community Relations Trust. He made the moves following amendments lodged by the St Helier Constable challenging the sustainability of the financing proposals.

The Constable’s amendments included proposals that the States back proper funding for the trust so that its work in tackling discrimination and racism in Jersey can be effective in the long term.Mr Crowcroft contended that P & R ‘sensed defeat in the air’ and that was why the committee withdrew its proposition rather than have it debated in two week’s time.He said there were no cohesive plans to fund the new trust after an initial government grant of £100,000 for the first 18 months and pointed out the proposals expected the trust to come up with plans to find its own funding.
