Harbours face vote threat on Emeraude

Senator Ted Vibert is lodging a proposition asking the States to sack the committee for their handling of the affair and for damaging relationships between Jersey and France.Last Monday the Harbours and Airport Committee authorised legal moves to ‘arrest’ the vessel because of claims of £300,000 in unpaid harbour dues.Solidor V was impounded until Wednesday night when, after long negotiations, an agreement was reached and the £21 million vessel returned to sailing on the Jersey to St Malo route.Senator Vibert said: ‘I believe the actions of the committee had much wider ramifications regarding Jersey’s trade relations with France than the committee understood.

It was their inability to appreciate this and their failure to consult a wider group of States committees that make me believe that they are not competent to handle the administration and direction of this important transport committee.’However, Harbours Committee president Senator Len Norman said that his committee would ‘robustly resist’ the vote of no confidence.
