MOTOR SPORT: Gavey powers to record time

Kent Gavey, from Guernsey, lowered the motorcycle 751 cc to 1000 cc time by two-hundredths of a second to 10.65 seconds astride his Suzuki GSXR machine.James Le Sueur rode superbly in the same class to take second with a time of 11.03 seconds.In all, 24 motorcycles and 17 cars took part in the event which was run in dry conditions, and every competitor received one practice and six official runs.Terry Hamon was the sole competitor in the motorcycles up to 125 cc class and he recorded a best time of 13.23 seconds, still 0.30 seconds outside his own record.

Matthew Falloon was the best 250 cc motorcyclist in a time of 12.92 seconds, which he recorded on his first run, while Kevin Bishop was quickest in the up to 500 cc class in a time of 13.34 seconds on his Weslake.The 501 cc to 750 cc class saw ten competitors on the start line and it was Andy Simpson on his Yamaha 600 cc machine who reigned supreme in the time of 11.26 seconds, with Paul Woosnam in second place with a best time of 11.55 seconds.In the unlimited class Paul Traylen, the fastest man down the course on two wheels, could not match his usual performance as he did not record a time under 11 seconds, his best being 11.09 seconds, which took place on his third run.In the historic class, Ken Laurent was the best on the Triumph Tiger in a time of 14.72 seconds.For this meeting the sidecar returned, and with Malcolm Gallichan in control and Andy Simpson in the chair they were not far outside their own record with a time of 12.46 seconds.Moving to four wheels, and newcomer Dominic Newby was impressive in his Westfield as he recorded a best time of 14.73 seconds.Peter Swann was the only Post Historic Car and his best time was 16.75 seconds, while Barry Eloie in the racing car class 1101 cc to 1600 cc was the best in a time of 11.15 seconds.

Andrew Allenet recorded a time of 13.34 seconds in the 2-valve racing car class and Mick Lancashire in the 601 cc to 1100cc racing car class had a time of 12.32 seconds.There were two competitors in the racing car class unlimited, but it was soon reduced to one when Christina Holley only made it as far as the quarry in practice and had to retire with a broken gearbox.

This left John Fossey to take the honours in a quickest time of 12.37 seconds.In the three classes for rally cars nine competitors lined up at the start, all trying out their engines for this week’s Jersey Rally.Chris Le Bonniec in the turbo-powered Ford was quickest overall in a time of 12.65 seconds while Sue Fossey showed the lads the way as she was quickest in the 1601 cc to 2000 cc class in a time of 13.43 seconds, the only racer in this class to go below 14 seconds.Matt Bougourd had the smallest car with his Metro 1296 cc and he recorded a best time of 17.71 seconds.Len Amy only decided to enter the event on the Friday but he was second- fastest car down the sprint in his Mallock as he recorded a time of 12 seconds exactly.The JMC&LCC would like to thank Paramedic Jason Hamon and the crew from St John Ambulance for their attendance.
