Scheme launched for gifted students

The aim of the scheme is to develop young people who both achieve the highest academic success and act as role models and leaders.Head teacher Richard Rolfe explained: ‘It’s really about identifying the students and then producing a programme for them.

They can take all the opportunities they want for GCSEs.

If they don’t want to take them, that’s fine – it’s not about hothousing, it’s about developing the child.’The programme starts in Year 7 with extension activities and the identification of those who can be considered gifted and talented.Gifted students are those who have abilities in one or more subjects in the statutory school curriculum other than art and design, music and PE.

Talented pupils, on the other hand, are those whose abilities are rooted in art and design, music, physical education, or in sports or performing arts such as dance and drama.Students will have the opportunity to be involved in activities that build leadership skills.
