Union anger at job loss plan

At a meeting last night union representatives branded proposed cuts in the size of the public sector workforce ‘irresponsible and dangerous’ due to the adverse effect they will have on service delivery.Transport and General Workers Union regional official Nick Corbe said if the cuts were allowed to happen, they would have a dramatic impact on the standards of service delivered to the public.

He said the union will not co-operate with the implementation process that the Policy and Resources Committee want to initiate to achieve the reduction in the size of the public sector.

And Mr Corbel warned: ‘We will make our feelings known.

What is proposed will affect hundreds of families if jobs are not there.’About two thirds of all union shop stewards attended and Mr Corbel described the mood as volatile.

The meeting was held following revelations that the Policy and Resources Committee is intent on reducing the number of States employees by 600 by 2008.

He said there was particular concern because there seemed to be fewer jobs available.

‘People are really worried about their own future and those of their families,’ he said.
