Furze fire caused by sparks from bonfire

Workers were clearing a c?til on Route de l’Etacq at around 4.30 pm when a gust of wind carried a spark from one of the piles of burning waste onto the furze.They raised the alarm as the fire spread up the steep slope, engulfing an area 100 sq m.It was brought under control by the Fire Service at 5.50 pm, and the last appliance left the area some three and a half hours later after the area had been damped down.One of the pumps used had been called away from an inspection at a cottage on St Saviour’s Hill where the owner had tackled a fire on roof beams.

The Fire Service used thermal imaging cameras to declare the beams safe and they cut away the area that had been affected.Sub-officer Martin Cotillard has warned Islanders to continue taking care to prevent fires as the land is still very dry.
