But the man who took possession of the drugs was spared a prison sentence after the Royal Court heard that he only took cocaine because of the long hours he worked as a stonemason.Peter Steadman (41) was jailed after the court heard about his previous record for importing 1.2 tons of cannabis into the UK.

Although he was not accused of importing the drugs, the prosecution said that he had taken two ounces of cocaine from one person and passed one of them to his co-accused, Paul Coles.Coles was sentenced to 240 hours of community service, and was told that he was lucky to have escaped jail.

Both men pleaded guilty.Coles (36) said that he was not a recreational user of the class A drug, but that he used it as a stimulant because of the very long hours he worked at his stonemasonry business.The Bailiff, Sir Philip Bailhache, was sitting with Jurats de Veulle, Bullen, Clapham, Allo, Quérée and Georgelin.
