Higher charges to pay for tighter port security

The Harbours and Airport Committee is requesting the States approve new safety and security measures to protect passengers, Jersey vessels, ships in Jersey waters and areas that handle international shipping. The committee today lodged the proposal, which, if approved, would come into effect on 1 July next year.SOLAS (Safety of Life at Sea), which includes the International Ship and Port Security (ISPS) Code, follows the terrorist attack on the World Trade Centre two years ago and would safeguard the future use of the ports of the Island by international shipping. The proposal, which has been endorsed by Policy and Resources and Home Affairs, is essential if shipping services between the Island, the UK and the continent are to continue.
