The only candidate for the post, Jones, president of the Jersey Triathlon Club, takes over from Eileen Vowden, who is standing down for personal reasons. At last night’s meeting it was also agreed that Jones would travel to the Shetlands in early November to find out more about the facilities and accommodation. At the moment it seems likely that most of the Island squad will spend the week away in a cruise liner, moored at the Island capital, Lerwick, although three sports, gymnastics, table tennis and sailing, take place between ten and 20 miles away from Lerwick and adequate accommodation is believed to be available locally. How the squad will eventually travel to the Shetlands has yet to be decided. After being told of the council’s decision, Jones said: ‘I am delighted – I’m really looking forward to it, although the biggest challenge will be how to get people there and back and also organising where they’ll stay.’
