University of Jersey plan

A research group led by the principal of Highlands College, Ed Sallis, has been in discussion in recent months with finance industry leaders and the Policy and Resources Department and a number of Islanders have already been asked for their views. Also closely involved is Professor Malcolm Johnson, a specialist based at Bristol University.Dr Sallis explained that the project had developed after the college was given a small grant to establish a small social science research centre.

‘We have been doing a couple of bits of thinking about Jersey and one idea was whether Jersey needed a university.

‘What we said was that if it was looking interesting, if there was any excitement, we should carry on.

We have had some very good discussions over the past year, but it has got to the stage now where a more practical approach is called for.’The first formal presentation is to take place early next year, in conjunction with the Highlands College board of governors annual conference.
