Eight of 76 Jersey fishermen granted Guernsey licences

There have been 76 applications for a Guernsey licence, but only eight applications were granted – all the others have been rejected. The scheme was due to come into effect on 1 October.

However, an intervention was made by Policy and Resources president Senator Frank Walker, Economic Development president Deputy Gerald Voisin, and Attorney General William Bailhache, who visited Guernsey in late September to meet Guernsey Deputies Laurence Morgan, Claire Le Pelley, and Lyndon Trott. The outcome of that meeting was that applications by Jersey fishermen for Guernsey licences were reviewed on 15 October, and all Jersey fishermen could continue fishing until the end of the month.

All the unsuccessful applicants have until the end of November to lodge a formal appeal against the decision, and several Jersey fishermen are now in contact with their lawyers, according to the chairman of the Jersey Fishermen’s Association, Deputy Mike Taylor.
