The Deputy Bailiff, Michael Birt, said that the situation was deplorable and that it meant he was unable to do what he believed would be best for the boys and for the public.Les Chênes Residential School, or Greenfields as it is now known, will no longer accept youths who have been convicted and can only hold youngsters who are on remand from the courts.

The Young Offenders Institute at La Moye can only accept prisoners aged 15 and over, which means that children below that age can commit crimes without fear of a custodial sentence.

Three boys who were under 15 and who cannot be named for legal reasons, were sentenced for a series of crimes dating back to May this year.
