Telecoms market opens to a third competitor

The licence has been granted despite objections from Jersey Telecom – the only organisation to provide a written response to the application during the consultation period.Jersey Telecom said today they believed that duplication of telecoms infrastructure was ‘not the best way forward for the Island’.The British-based Cable & Wireless group, which provides services in 33 countries – including a number of finance centres in the Caribbean – submitted its formal application in March.

Last year the firm bought out Guernsey Telecom, along with a 50 per cent interest in the fibre-optic cable linking Guernsey to Jersey and France.
