All politicians to be elected on the same day in 2005?

The Special Committee on the Composition and Election of the States Assembly met on Friday to discuss the report lodged by the previous committee.

They decided not to proceed with the suggestions to reduce the number of Senators to eight – as previously suggested by the Special Committee led by Senator Mike Vibert – but agreed to work towards a new set of measures. These include:- A single election day for all States Members in autumn 2005.- A four-year term of office for all Island politicians.- Up to four new constituencies not linked to parishes.Committee member Deputy Roy Le Hérissier said that the discussions had broken the stalemate over how the States should proceed with the Clothier Report.

Although proposals for ministerial government have been pushed through the States, progress on other elements of the report has stalled.A public meeting will be held in January to further consider the changes.
