Questions in the Lords on impact of new constitution

The questions, by Lord Pearson of Rannoch, are still in draft form, but they concern the position of the Channel Islands in the light of what Eurosceptics believe will be the loss of UK sovereignty under the constitution.Lord Pearson has been asked by the Guernsey States Member, Deputy David Jones, to try to ascertain from the Minister responsible for Channel Island constitutional affairs as to whether Protocol 3 of the 1972 Treaty of Accession will remain unamended in the event of the British government signing up to the new EU Constitution next June. The Protocol defines the relationship between the Islands and the EU.

As things stand, for it to be amended a treaty change would be required, and this would require unanimity of Member States to approve it.
