Budget Day ‘is Black Tuesday’

A collective of seven leading businessmen have been joined by David Le Quesne, the chief executive of Randalls Vautier, the brewery and pub chain which employs 600 people in the Island. The company will urge as many of its employees as possible to be at the protest, claiming that their livelihoods are being threatened by Finance and Economics policies. The organisers are hoping that up to 1,000 people will show their opposition on the morning of the Budget debate.

Other firms and offices are being urged to close for an hour to attend the protest.Mr Le Quesne released figures this morning that showed that duty on alcohol in Jersey will be higher than in the UK.

Under the Budget proposals duties on alcohol are set to rise again by up to 21% and Mr Le Quesne says enough is enough.Keen to show that the group is not just being negative, the collective last night discussed alternative ways of raising funds and cutting costs and will present their ‘alternative budget’ before 2 December.Organiser Roger Trower, of Broadland Estates, said: ‘We will be urging States Members to reject and re-think the Budget.

We want facts before tax.’The group planning the protest involves representatives from the motor trade, estate agents, finance, and tourism.
