Hockey:Herbert looks part on England debut

Jersey College for Girls pupil Herbert, who is 17, played in central midfield in a 3-2 first Test defeat against Japan in Canterbury.Speaking from the UK this morning, Beckie’s father Tim, who accompanied his daughter to London yesterday and watched the match, said that Beckie was brought on to play about 15 minutes into the first half.’She played until half-time then came off, and went back on again midway into the second half.

She did all the right things and was involved in the build-up to England’s second goal which eventually came from a penalty flick.

She was the youngest in the squad so she had to show maturity – and I think she did so.

She certainly didn’t look out of her depth.’Although England lost, Herbert snr said they played well and gave a good account of themselves against the visitors who are ranked tenth in the world.’With most of England’s A string playing in Australia at the moment I think they will be pleased with the performance,’ he said.Father and daughter had some problems getting to the UK yesterday, with the fog causing delays and, in the end, a change of flight and destination.Herbert has another opportunity to play against Japan tonight, this time in Chelmsford.England’s goals were scored by Kerry Moore and Lisa Wooding.
