Police motorcyclist is ‘seriously ill’ after crash

Pc Paul Thomas was riding with two other officers east along Mount Bingham with lights flashing just after 2 pm when he is believed to have lost control on a left-hand bend.He came off the bike and slid under the wheels of a car travelling west.

Members of the Jersey Field Squadron rushed back to their headquarters to fetch a trolley jack and joined passers-by trying to lift the car off Pc Thomas. The 45-year-old officer remained trapped under the front wheels for around 20 minutes before being freed.

Deputy police chief Lennie Harper said that the quick thinking and actions of these people saved the officer from far worse injuries.Pc Thomas sustained multiple injuries, including a number of broken ribs, two collapsed lungs and internal bleeding. An initial investigation has shown that he was travelling at around 41 mph.Mr Harper said: ‘It appears he came off his motorcycle and went across the road and under a motor vehicle coming the opposite direction.

The driver of the car saw the blue lights and was slowing down when he saw the motorcycle coming across the road.

Thankfully, he was almost stopped when the officer went under the car.

The driver reacted very, very well and was in no way to blame.’
