Warning: ‘States cuts will mean job losses’

Yesterday, all States Members met as a committee to discuss the Fundamental Spending Review process, and the subject of public sector redundancies was raised several times.

The States are the biggest employer in the Island, retaining around 6,000 workers, with staff costs accounting for 60 per cent of all public spending.Politicians have been uncomfortable with the subject throughout the spending review process, but one senior politician said that job losses were inevitable.’We have to be honest, cuts will mean redundancies but they must be done corporately,’ said Senator Stuart Syvret, the president of Health and Social Services. His comments follow unemployment figures released yesterday that showed the number of people out of work doubled last year, and that the real number of people without jobs could be even higher than that.
