Christmas ‘could be a financial disaster’

They say the States should take more action to cut their own spending, instead of burdening the taxpayer, and they have pledged to fight any attempt to introduce indirect taxes.Last week the Jersey Bankers Association urged people to manage their budgets carefully, warning that difficult times were ahead.John King, chairman of the Jersey Chamber of Commerce retail and supply sub-committee, said: ‘Our view is that once again the emphasis seems to be on increasing the burden on the man in the street.

We are not seeing the cutting of costs in the States, although we keep being promised it.’What business people are saying now is that enough is enough – we can’t go on like this.

What we want to hear now is what is being done by the States to cut costs.’
