The Senator faced accusations at a Chamber of Commerce lunch that the States were incapable of cutting the wage bill that accounts for 60 per cent of public spending and was asked whether States committees were unable to take on the unions.The Budget has not been warmly received by the business community, with some industry chiefs planning a protest outside the States Chamber to coincide with the debate.Senator Le Sueur gave a presentation defending Budget proposals for increases in fuel, tobacco and alcohol duties, vehicle registration duty and dramatic cutbacks in mortgage interest tax relief.
He said it seemed like he was facing a firing squad as he began his speech, before taking questions from the floor.
