The figures were announced at a public meeting in St Martin’s Public Hall last night attended by more than 150 people. In a bid to counter any misinformation brought about since Angie Petkovic drew attention to the gardens in January, the team behind the proposed restoration met with the public to give a picture of their plans and answer any questions.Horticultural director Tony Russell later explained that these helpers would be involved in placement work for two or three weeks at a time.

They would be used to assist a core team of Island gardeners and staff employed to work in the gardens on a permanent basis.Proposed La Chaire Gardens charitable trust members Judith Quérée, Ian Barnes, Robin Lapidus and Julie Sabin joined directors Ms Petkovic and Mr Russell on the platform.

They told the assembled audience, the majority of whom appeared to be against the restoration, that an investment of £1.6m now could result in £50m for the Jersey economy in the future.
