Darts players angry at sponsors’ ‘stay and play’

The £15,000 prize fund will only be distributed to players who are booked into the St Helier hotel.Jersey Darts Organisation official Bobby Williams said: ‘I think it’s a joke.

How can it be a Jersey Open when only people staying at the hotel are allowed to compete? Many of the Jersey players are really disappointed as in previous Modern Hotels tournaments there have been wild card entries into the main competition.’Why should I have to book into a hotel to play in a competition when I’ve got perfectly good accommodation just around the corner?’Shirley Langdridge, of Isle of Wight Tours, said: ‘We have taken over the Modern Hotels Open and together with Isle of Wight Tours and Jersey Tourism we have sponsorship to the tune of £15,000 and, yes, if players want to win any of the money they have to be staying in the hotel.’The Open begins this evening with men’s and ladies’ pairs from 8.30.

On Sunday the men’s and ladies’ singles tournaments take place from 2.30 pm.
