Homes evacuated after Gorey gas blaze

The area around the former Old Station House at Gorey, now a domestic property, was sealed off and the road closed to traffic, while firemen wore breathing apparatus to deal with the blaze there.Led by sub officer Mike Baudains, the firefighers tackled the incident with the assistance of States and honorary police, the ambulance service and representatives of the Jersey Gas Company and Jersey Electricity Company.Mr Baudains said it was essential to keep the gas main alight while the nearby property was doused down with water and all the services worked closely together to deal with the incident.’We couldn’t allow the gas main to go out at that time because there would have been the risk of a gas cloud and a potentially more explosive situation,’ Mr Baudains said. The fire damaged the roof area at the rear of the property and smoke and heat affected the interior.
