Jersey’s fans get their kicks

Pubs were packed from just after 8 am all over Jersey as fans waited for the big match against the Australians.

And about three hours later when Jonny Wilkinson scored the winning drop goal with seconds left of extra time, euphoria was very much the emotion of the day.One Island family that certainly had more cause than most to enjoy the fantastic 20-17 victory were the Brackens.

Kyran Bracken was Matt Dawson’s understudy at scrum-half in the England squad but unfortunately for him he did not get the chance to earn his 50th international Test cap during the match and had to settle for sitting on the bench at the Telstra Stadium.A number of the Bracken family were at the match, including Kyran’s father, Joe, and his sister, Jane.

Elsewhere in the stadium, it is understood there were at least 30 Islanders cheering on Martin Johnson’s men.Back in the Island, understandably the atmosphere at the Jersey Rugby Club at St Peter was among the most celebratory.
