Flooding destroys stock in ‘safe’ shop

The damage to Jason Mourant’s Paperclix office supplies store at Sandybrook is all the more annoying because he had been told the shop was safe only last week. With winter fast approaching, Mr Mourant approached Public Services last week because he wanted to build a small wall to protect his property in case the brook at Sandybrook burst its banks. However, he was told that no wall was necessary as the brook had been widened and the flooding problem resolved. The torrential rain yesterday and this morning was the highest recorded at the Airport – 49.1mm – in a 24-hour period in November since records began in 1951.At Maison St Louis, the total recorded in 24 hours up to 9 am today was 39.6mm, making it the wettest November day there since 1980, and the total at Howard Davis Farm was 34mm.But despite the recent wet conditions, the total for the year is still well below the long-term average, following the hot and relatively dry summer.

The total for Maison St Louis so far this year stands at nearly 650mm, compared to an annual average of 843mm.
