Football:Guingamp to play Jersey this month

The Brittany club, who are currently languishing in 18th position in Le Championnat, will play at Springfield on either 29 or 30 December, the date still to be finalised by both parties.JFA vice-president Charlie Binet, who met with Guingamp’s managing director in Jersey on Friday, said: ‘We’re delighted Guingamp will be coming to the Island and playing a game against Jersey.

They will be here for several days preparing for a Cup match early in the New Year and I’m looking forward to seeing them play.’Guingamp is only a 45-minute drive from St Malo and this is a good opportunity for the JFA to forge a link with a club and hopefully give some opportunities for our under-16 and under-18 players in the future.’Guingamp, who are paying their own expenses, will travel to Jersey by air and their party is expected to number around 80.The French club have made their way up from Division III to Division I in the past few seasons together with making an appearance in the French KO Cup final during the same period. This season a lack of finance has forced them to sell a couple of their leading players and following yesterday’s 2-1 defeat away to Lens the north west France outfit are occupying 18th position in the 20-team division – four points off relegation safety.
