Athletics:Track star Carter ready to move on up

Carter, studying architectural and structural engineering at Bath University, gave himself a strong platform to fight off the strongest challenger, veteran Nick Gorrod, to win the race in 33 min 50 sec.The event formed part of his winter training for next year’s track season when the 2001 Island Games gold medallist may move up from his current favoured distance, the 1,500m, to 5,000m.He and Gorrod were together for much of the way on Sunday, Carter gaining ground at La Pulente Hill and finishing 15 seconds in front.Said Carter: ‘I came over for a bit of a break and to run the 10k.’I am planning to move up from 1500 to 5000m, mainly because my own physiology is better suited to that distance.

I did the 10k just to break up my winter training.

I was pleased, it went quite quickly.

I’m a bit worried that it will be very boring running 5,000m around a track!’I’ll still be doing 1500 next summer but it won’t be my main focus.’In third was senior Jon Coote in 35.32, and fourth was Peter Le Couilliard, first in the 50+ age category, in 35.39.The women’s race was more clear cut, Jo McGarry taking the honours in 39.06, with Barbara Parker finishing second in 40.20, and Sarah Bruce, just three seconds behind, all three winning their age categories.Over 40 runners completed the race from the Les Quennevais cycle track, along Quennevais Road, down Mont à la Brune, along the Five Mile Road, up La Pulente Hill and back along the Railway Walk to Les Quennevais. It was the third in a series of road races sponsored by Vowden Sports and organised by the RBC Jersey Spartan Athletic Club.Senior men: 1, Ian Carter, 33 min 50 sec; 2, Jon Coote, 35.32; 3, Tim Rogers, 35.44; 4, Richard Ahier, 35.56; 5, Mark Allen, 37.02; 6, Warwick Ainger, 37.52; 7, Damian Maher, 38.59; 8, Glenn Robinson, 40.01; 9, Adrian Kemp, 44.13; 10, David Hazzard, 47.10; 11, Mark Harris, 49.18.Veteran men (40+): 1, Nick Gorrod, 34.05; 2, Rob Douglas, 37.23; 3, Richard Howard, 38.27; 4, Dave Hallden, 38.36; 5, Kevin Lovatt, 40.42; 6, Richard Davy, 42.14; 7, Dave Speed, 42.39; 8, Adam Leather, 45.35; 9, Vic Gonsalves, 48.23.Senior veteran men (50+): 1, Peter Le Couilliard, 35.39; 2, John Cunningham, 40.05; 3, Bernie Arthur, 40.13; 4, Paul Huddlestone, 40.32; 5, Terry Rumney, 41.30; 6, Ron Lee, 42.17; 7, Sam O’Hare, 51.02; 8, Richard Sowerby, 52.13; 9, Derek Taylor, 52.55.Senior women: 1, Jo McGarry, 39.06; 2, Liz Jenner, 47.46; 3, Annette Campbell, 61.39.Veteran women (35+): 1, Sarah Bruce, 40.23; 2, Sylvia Thompson, 42.45; 3, Debbie Donaldson, 47.18; 4, Maureen Douglas, 49.04; 5, Jeannete Aubert, 59.46.Senior veteran women (45+): 1, Barbara Parker, 40.20; 2, Sue Le Ruez, 41.59; 3, Shirley McGhee, 56.23; 4, Shirley Rowe, 57.56.
