Motor racing: Walker picks up his prize as career gathers momentum

The 19-year-old Jersey racing driver, who is about to fast forward his intended career as a Formula 1 driver by competing in Formula 3 this year, was formally presented with the UK Formula Ford Scholarship champion’s trophy for his superb performance last season at the TOCA Awards dinner at the weekend.The TOCA Awards recognise the UK’s premier racing series and the presentation was made by TV’s Tony Jardine, F1 pundit for ITV’s Grand Prix coverage.TOCA is the body which runs a circuit similar to the Grand Prix racing circuit, and it’s biggest event in the British Touring car championship, with the Formula Ford scholarship class a part of its package.Walker said that it felt good to be among the cream of UK motor sport.’It was great to have my family and team there to share the experience.

It’s been a fantastic year, but we’re all now focusing on moving up to Formula 3 for 2004.

We’re working full-time on finding the budget, but we’ve already raised a significant amount and are hoping to confirm plans before the end of the year.’Walker is increasingly being recognised as a real future F1 prospect.

The season review of Formula Ford racing in the latest issue of Autosport, the world-renowned motor sport industry publication, rated the youngster as the season’s best overall driver – above all the senior-class drivers, even the outright champion.
