Badminton:Cann edged out in Elite final

Cann, the No 2 seed, won her first game against up-and-coming junior Reshmi Ouseph from Middlesex 11-1, 11-0.Her second match, against Hampshire’s Elena Cox, who has been invited to train at Milton Keynes, was not quite so one-sided although Cann’s control of the game led to an 11-9, 11-2 win.In Sunday’s semi-final Cann met fellow squad player Kelly Matthews, from Herts, who she has faced many times before.

In a tough, uncompromising game, the Jersey player again won in straight sets, 11-9, 11-9.In the final Cann faced Korean international Sun Young Sook who set a very fast early pace in the first game.

Cann, unable to find the right rhythm, lost 11-1.In the second game Cann stepped up the pace herself, changed tactics, and won 11-0.After a five-minute break, with both players not sure now what the other would do, play resumed, again at pace.In an entertaining final game there were many long rallies, with very few mistakes and consequently the scores levelled, at 8-8, with Cann in the ascendancy before Young Sook took the next three points and, with it, the match.Despite her defeat Cann was pleased with her overall standard of play and recognises that to beat the Far Eastern players she needs to compete outside Europe in China, Malaysia and the Far East.To do that, however, will costmoney; anyone interested in sponsoring Elizabeth Cann is asked to phone 07763 727 330.
