Little response to firm’s ‘adopt a worker’ idea

The initiative was launched earlier this week to provide temporary work over Christmas and the New Year for those made redundant following the collapse of Five Oaks Garages. So far, just one employer, Tie Rack franchise-holder Peter Jones, has come forward and offered to take on a worker for the three-month period envisaged by Equipment Rental. However, the company has received a bigger response from workers looking for work.

Jo Bisson, a spokeswoman for Equipment Rental, said that the company had been approached by seven out-of-work former Five Oaks staff, most of whom were from the bodyshop section of the business which has been scaled down since being taken on by Jacksons. She said: ‘A lot of these people left school, did apprenticeships and went straight into work and have never been without work.’The response so far has been encouraging, but we hope that other employers will show a little Christmas spirit and help out so that these families can have presents under the tree.’
