Don’t blame us, say Jersey Bus

Chris Lewis, managing director of Jersey Bus, denies assertions that his company deliberately agreed to a 20 per cent increase in drivers’ wages in order to increase the cost of running bus services when Connex took over.It was claimed in the States yesterday by Environment and Public Services president Deputy Maurice Dubras that the former operators agreed a change to terms and conditions with the Transport Union that added £238,000 to the Connex wage bill and this information was not passed on.

The States learnt yesterday that £187,000 of this extra cost was being met from public funds. However, Mr Lewis is adamant that both an officer from the Public Services Department and the consultants Halcrow were informed in good time the agreement had been reached.
