Football:Tempers flare as Wanderers advance

Combination Division I table last night after defeating them 1-0 in bad-tempered affair at Springfield.

Island winger Chris Andrews nodded home the only goal in the 13th minute and a bright and entertaining first half was well and truly forgotten at the finish.

It will be the indiscipline that will be remembered as Portuguese had defender Artur Calaca sent off while a total of 11 players were cautioned.Calaca was red-carded after kicking Paul Banahan while, soon after, Portuguese were fortunate the match officials did not see José Costa give Banahan’s genitals a mighty tug as they would surely have been reduced to nine.HeartBoth sides stroked the ball around well on a greasy surface in the first half, Portuguese being well-served by Kenyan Nelson Mwakazi in midfield while Neal Cabot was at the heart of most of Wanderers’ attacks.Paulo Campos could do little as Andrews’ header from a free kick flew up off the wet surface to register Wanderers’ goal, but he came to his side’s rescue with three fine saves in as many minutes to twice deny Chris Hamon and then Cabot whose 25-yard effort was heading towards a top corner.Hamon should have doubled Wanderers’ lead just before the break but he just failed to get his boot to a fine cross from Andrews. At the other end of the field Wanderers ‘keeper Jimmy Styles kept his goal intact with a couple of fine punched clearances while under pressure.Chances in a fractious and niggly second period you could count on one hand – substitute Duarte Ferreira missing a great chance to level the scores when he lifted the ball over Wanderers’ crossbar from seven yards.Andrews looked certain to make it 2-0 but after racing clear from the half-way line Campos denied him and right at the finish Campos was again in action tipping over a powerful 22-yard drive from Hamon.Portuguese: Paulo Campos; Helio De Freitas, Antonio Costa, Artur Calaca, Joao Gouveia; José Costa, Nelson Mwakazi, Marco Varela, Pedro Lopes (Duarte Ferreira, 70); José-Manuel Vieira, Vitor Santos.Sent off: Calaca.
